Why does an abundance of money often lead to divorce?

You can probably understand that a lack of money is a significant factor in contributing to couples divorcing. Any kind of relationship between two people can be difficult when there is no money to have fun anymore, or when you are both feeling the pressure of debt.

Slightly less easy to understand is why an abundance of money can also be a problem in a marriage. Here are some reasons that well-off couples end up divorcing because of their money.

It’s not “their” money

Financial inequality is a common source of arguments among wealthy couples. One person may be the main source of funds, whether from business or inheritance.  That can be hard for both of them to live with. It can lead to accusations of overspending or being too tight, frustration that one does not contribute more, or that they want to “waste their time” earning their own money in a low-paid job.

Money is usually exchanged for time

Some people have plenty of money and time, but most need to give one for the other. If one or both spouses are constantly working to earn the big bucks, then maintaining a working relationship can be harder because they see less of each other and may be exhausted and stressed from the tolls of work much of the time when they do.

Big earners can have big debts

Those who earn big often spend big, which can soon see the paychecks disappear and the credit cards get maxed out. As with less wealth off couples, debt can often lead to arguments, stress, finger-pointing and suspicion that destroys a marriage.

Whatever your level of wealth, if money has played a role in your breakup, then it’s likely to be a cause of contention in your divorce. Seeking legal guidance can help you protect your rights.
