Using self-care to combat post-divorce blues

On Behalf of | Nov 16, 2021 | Divorce |

Feelings of hopelessness after your divorce in Virginia may cause you to question whether you will ever feel happy again. While it will undoubtedly take time and a bit of grit, your determination can help you recover and minimize the residual effects of your split on your mental health.

Self-care is an excellent way to tune into your feelings and identify where you need the most support. Taking good care of yourself, especially during the hard times, can facilitate healing and personal growth.

Understanding self-care

Self-care looks different for everyone. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, self-care references activities that allow you to find enjoyment and thus improve your quality of life. Some examples of things you can do include the following:

  • Prioritize your rest
  • Develop a positive attitude
  • Eat a balanced diet
  • Do something active each day
  • Participate in uplifting social activities
  • Set goals and celebrate accomplishments

Perhaps you discontinued a hobby during your marriage. Another form of self-care may look like revisiting this hobby or learning a new skill.

Moving onward

Making a consistent effort to do something for yourself may introduce enjoyment into your life on a regular basis. This may improve your attitude and help you develop optimism. In conjunction with therapy, you may find that you learn healthy and productive ways to process difficult emotions.

Even though divorce brings challenging circumstances, you can use it as a resource to improve your life. Refusing to allow your split to control your future allows you the freedom to create the life you have always wanted.
