Actor files divorce petition following lengthy separation

Cuba Gooding Jr. fans may have heard that the actor has finally filed for divorce from his wife following a separation of almost three years. News outlets in Virginia and elsewhere have been following the story. “Irreconcilable differences” was cited as grounds for the initial separation.

Earlier, Gooding had suggested the possibility of a reconciliation during an appearance on the “Steve Harvey Show” in March 2016. During the show, the actor acknowledged that he was still married and characterized the separation as a “break” that might be experienced during any marriage. He also discussed attending a movie with his estranged wife around that time and indicated that he was interested in keeping his marriage together for the children.

The popular actor and Sara Kapfer were high-school sweethearts. They married in 1994 and have three children together. According to reports, Gooding is asking to keep all the earnings that he has received subsequent to the date that Kapfer first filed the petition for legal separation. The actor is reportedly seeking joint legal and physical custody of the couple’s 10-year-old daughter, and sources say that he is also willing to pay spousal support.

Many couples who have separated want to get the divorce process over as quickly as possible. However, others might choose to delay filing, especially when they have young children who they want to protect from the strife. Attorneys might suggest mediation as a way to avoid public and sometimes bitter court battles in such a case.
