Couples that don't match in looks may be more likely to divorce

Virginia residents who are married may want to take a good look in the mirror. Experts say that attractiveness matters in marriage, especially if one spouse is significantly more attractive than the other. Research has shown that men who marry women who are "out of their league," or physically more attractive than their husbands, are at higher risk of winding up divorced.

Both men and women tend to pursue romantic partners who are more attractive than they are, according to analysis of online dating sites. However, most people actually wind up in relationships with people who are a match for them on the attractiveness scale.

Research says that when a man does marry a woman who is more attractive than he is, she may be more likely to flirt with other men and feel less committed to her marriage. Other studies show that mismatched couples might be on shaky ground not because of the more attractive partner's commitment issues but because of the less attractive partner's jealousy.

A social psychology professor at Eastern Connecticut State University says that friendship prior to marriage might make attractiveness less important in the relationship. She cites a study that showed that couples who knew each other for a long time before they became romantically involved are less likely to be concerned with physical attractiveness when they get together as a couple and throughout their relationship.

When a married person in Virginia wants a divorce, if both partners agree, they can file for a no-fault divorce. Before a no-fault divorce can be granted, the couple must be separated. Couples who do not have children must live separately for a period of at least six months before a no-fault divorce can be obtained. For couples with children, the separation must continue for at least one year. A lawyer may be able to help with difficulties that arise during any part of the process.
